Day of Magazines

When I walked into work today, I thought “today might be the day….the day I see my writing in actual print.” And it is! Today was a very exciting day because the September issue of Where Toronto magazine is out, and I’m published in it. This is a huge milestone for me and I hope to keep getting better and get more things published. I will be in the next 4 issues as well as another magazine that we were chartered to create called SkyLife. The September issue should be online in a few days, so I’ll post a link and better pictures then. For now you’ll just have to deal with my shameless promotion:

Me and Ryan, no big deal.

Aside from my amazing publication, on the way back from lunch I FINALLY picked up the September issue of W. There must have been some kind of delay in shipping or printing because this is literally the first week it was on newsstands. I checked almost every day for the magazine. I think Kristen Stewart looks so amazing on the cover, amazing enough for me to purchase the magazine. I love W but I don’t usually buy it for whatever reason (I’m more of a Nylon girl, shhh don’t tell). Anyways, that was my day. I’m going to go read W now.

P.S. In case anyone was wondering, I wore the outfit I previously posted about. I think it was a success.

Zara Shopping Spree

So I ventured on a 30 minute subway ride to one of my favourite malls: Yorkdale. It’s pretty high-end but it has just about every store you’d want to shop in. I allowed myself to buy an outfit since I’ve been struggling with personal style and all. As I was searching for images of the things I bought I saw the U.S. prices making me want to cry because the prices are higher in Canada, the Canadian dollar is worth more than the U.S. dollar, and we’re taxed 13%. That’s hard to deal with and for that reason I don’t think I could live here permanently. It’s so expensive. But enough about money, here is what I bought:

Striped shirt (total basic necessity for the Fall)

Red Pants (which I think will turn out to be the best investment for the Fall, as coloured denim is going to be very popular)

Black Pistol Boots (they’re probably not called that, I stole the name from the Acne pistol boots)

Current Obsession

I watched Blue Valentine starring Michelle Williams and my current love interest Ryan Gosling. While watching the movie, I got really into their 90s-esque outfits: shapeless florals, plaids, cotton t-shirts and leather jackets. But what really caught my attention was how Ryan’s character wears a vintage gold Casio watch, like the one I have pictured. I was so intrigued by it and am now convinced it must be mine. It’s gold, vintage, and digital; my three favourite watch characteristics.

Style Identity Crisis

Since I’ve been in Toronto, I haven’t really bought much– clothes-wise. I’ve bought two very cheap shirts from one of my favourite stores Johnathan + Olivia. When TopShop brought a pop-up shop to Toronto, this is the store where they housed the collection. Amongst the Topshop brand, you’ll find Acne, Alexander Wang, A.P.C.,  and some other amazing brands I’ve never heard of. So I found 2 TopShop Unique shirts for a total of $31, pretty good deal, and that Zara shirt ($9), as I previously mentioned. But otherwise, I haven’t found anything I really like, and so I’ve come to determine that I am struggling with my personal style.

I think we all go through it, and I hate that ever-present question: “What do I want to wear today?” I think the weather here also has something to do with it, and the fact that I don’t have my entire wardrobe in Toronto with me (plane restrictions, what can you do?). I’ve always claimed my style to be “Romantically Edgy,” you can credit me for that. I really look up to Emma Roberts and Emma Watson for their style; mine is something similar. So lately I’ve been struggling with my own sense of style, and that’s been tough. I’ve included a few things that I can’t live without and that I wear everyday.

These are my staples:

(mine is like this one but no brown trimming, it’s all navy)

Panther Attack!

I am really a big fan of this Givenchy Fall 2011 campaign. I bought a knock-off shirt from Zara (below) that has a panther intensely staring at onlookers, in a very similar manner as depicted in this scarf. Not as fierce but it still evokes the essence of the Givenchy campaign. I love the colors: blacks, purples, greens, and just the tiniest hint of yellow. To me, it’s a dark theme and I’m all about edginess and mystery.

Top Shop also has a tank that’s a gritting panther depicted below (I’m also a fan).

OMG, Where Have I Been?

Alright, I graduated from the University of Georgia back in May, but what have I been doing since then? It’s now the end of August.

  1. Have I given up on writing?
  2. Do I hate fashion?
  3. Did I move to Canada?

Only one is true, guess….

I now live in Toronto, Ontario, long way from Athens, GA. I love it here and I’m interning for a travel/destination magazine about the city. I absolutely love my job and sincerely enjoy every day. It’s unpaid (major bummer) so I am trying to hustle on the side with some freelance writing. Anyways, I am still trying to make it in the fashion world and of course New York. I hope to move there shortly after I finish my internship in Toronto.

This is my magazine: Where Toronto. I can’t wait for the September issue to arrive because it has my first published articles! It’ very exciting. So far, I’ve learned that magazines is the industry for me. I can’t write enough and it just so happens that all those years of deadlines in school had trained me to work well with time limits and word counts.
